about us

In 2021, Alicia Reason and Lilia Kazakova crossed paths at the Venice Beach Dance Skate Plaza. They began training together, and quickly realized that they were kindred spirits, with a passionate love for roller skating and the Venice Beach community.

Combining their forces, they founded LA Roller Crew as a beacon of positivity and inspiration for the skate community in Venice Beach. With the rich history of Venice Beach roller skating, they saw an opportunity to showcase and represent a new generation of Venice Beach roller skaters.

Through the art of roller skating, they seek to promote health and wellness, inclusion, and diversity. Together, they vow to always present LA Roller Crew with its push on various initiatives that not only promote the sport, but also create a welcoming community for all.

The history of roller skating at Venice Beach

Roller skating has always been a popular activity at Venice Beach. LA Roller Crew likes to especially pay homage to the 1970s and 1980s, for this is when the gathering of roller skaters at the beach to perform for crowds of spectators began. Roller skaters would dress in colorful outfits, carry boomboxes, and gather in their reserved area to entertain the 10s of thousands of daily visitors. In the 1990s, jam skating began to gain popularity at Venice Beach, where many skaters began to incorporate dance moves and gymnastics into their skating routines.

Today, jam skating— alongside artistic skating, are two very popular skate styles at Venice Beach. Skaters continue to push the boundaries of the sport, incorporating new moves and techniques into their routines and pushing the limits of what is possible on roller skates. Today, roller skating at Venice Beach remains a popular activity. Skaters still gather, nowadays, at the designated Venice Beach Skate Dance Plaza to show off their skills and enjoy the sunny California weather.
